Some painting contractors seem to imitate this
old joke: There were these two guys
from Texas who had a little money and
an old pick-up truck, they heard
they could buy these watermelons in Mexico
for $1 each and they decided that they
could sell them for $10 per dozen.
They did a great business and sold out
before they even got halfway to Dallas.
But, while sitting on the side of the
road, counting their money, they noticed they
were a little short of the amount they
had started with. They wondered what the
problem was since they had done a
brisk business and it finally dawned on
them-what they needed was a bigger truck.

Every item in a room that we decorate
takes time out of your working day and
must be accounted for in your estimate.
Door handles, window catches finger plates, light
switches, wall furniture such as pictures must
be reinstated. When first taking off make
certain you keep everything together and don't
lose any screws, keep them altogether in
a box.

Who gives the estimate has a huge bearing
on the cost. A self employed painter
who may be temporally out of work will be
very happy to do your private work,
His outgoings are low and he is
able to paint a simple room without
complex trim for about £130 - £195. If
you hire a proper contractor with their
high overheads - you will pay 3-4
times that amount.

Lots of painters do not charge on their
estimate for replacing door, window and wall
furniture but this is a necessary part of
the job. You can hardly do a clean
job without removing these items. I have
seen painters leave a finished job with
fittings smothered in paint!! It might you say
only take about a hour or so but,
at the end of a year it will add
up to several hundreds of pounds, money
that you have worked hard for.

Some would be clients that ring me up, ask
how much do you charge to paint my
(front room)(bathroom)(staircase) or exterior of home.
I say to them I do not know
without actually seeing it. To which they
reply.. well it's this big, It's got
three widows, only one door though, it will
only need one coat, It's in good
condition even though my husband used to smoke
a lot in that room, How much do
you think then? I repeat I will have
to see the job!! Oh alright then,
here's the address, come round a 4 tomorrow,
hope you like cats I have ten.
Never give a written quote for an
unseen job, if you don't want a
nasty surprise.

When the inexperienced self employed painter has to
go out and price a job, no doubt
he will feel nervous at whether he
pitches his price too high or very often,
through eagerness to get the job, to low.
Only learning from experience will he get
this right. Go too low and the
painter will struggle from the start.

If the paint job is complicated the
painter may ask if he can do it
on a day-work rate. This is not
a good deal for the householder as there
is no telling what the eventual cost
will be. Insist on a price for
the whole job. Get an estimate from
another painter and compare the two.
They may differ greatly.
