How to Estimate Painting Cost

Before a painter even quotes for work he
must decide his own hourly rate. All
his estimates should be based on this.
To calculate your hourly rate you add up
all the expenses that are involved besides
your labor. These are: Transport, tools, brushes,
steps and ladders, materials, protective clothing,
advertising, phone bills and office or storage.
These are all costs to you, and
a proportion must be added to your
actual labor charge.

When the painter looks at your job and
cannot decide on a price and says he
will do the work on a daily rate,
say no! you want a price for the
whole job. What one painter can do
in 10 hours another may labor to do
it in 20 due to lack of
experience or may not be a painter
at all.

Decorating clients have of course very different
priorities. A percentage of them will view the
cost as their deciding factor. Some decorators
don't give them a estimate because they
see them as a headache and more
trouble than they are worth. On the
other hand there is the clients who
associate a low estimate with unqualified decorators
or poor quality of workmanship.

How to Estimate Painting Cost

The cost that you will be charged to
paint a room all depends on who you
hire to do the work, but I will
endeavor to give you a reasonable Idea.
Average cost in London.
Paint ceiling 2 coats of white emulsion.
Paint walls 2 coats of wall color.
Undercoat and gloss all woodwork in room.
Room Sizes (L/W/H Metres).
Average Labor only Cost by a professional painter.
3x3x3=450 pounds
4x5x3=600 pounds
4x6x3.5=875 pounds
Add to the above the cost of materials, which
I can only estimate at about 150 pounds a
room depending on size. The much cheaper
option if you are at all handy is
to put on some overalls and do
it yourself!! saving the labor cost which
accounts for about 80-90% of the price.

How to Estimate Painting Cost

There is no easy short-cut that you
can do in minutes what an experienced
decorating estimator will often take hours to
put together. Experienced judgment is required when
estimating complex paint jobs. It's your responsibility
alone to decide what makes this job that
you are estimating similar or different to
other jobs. When all the conditions may not be
the same. This is were you use your
experience and judgment to arrive at a
realistic proposal. Even then there is a
good chance your efforts will be unsuccessful,
but you win some you lose some!

If you adjusted your hourly rate for every
painter you employ by a mere £3 you
would make an extra £120 per week or
for three painters a not-to-be-sneezed
£360. Over a year this would really
mount up and you would achieve this
miracle without working any harder, but smarter.

How to Estimate Painting Cost

If when pricing for a painting contract you
knew the tender price of the opposition
and you was to put in a lower
estimate to get the work, you could
be on a loser before a brush
was used. Why? because your overheads, workforce
and productivity are unlikely to be the
same as the other company. Their overheads
might be very low and can afford
a cheap price, can you!!
